(Phoenix, AZ) -- Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is fighting a judge's decision ordering the appointment of a monitor to oversee his officers to make sure they don't use racial profiling in their crackdown on illegal immigrants. In May, a federal judge ordered the hardline Maricopa County Sheriff to stop using race when making decisions regarding law enforcement. That ruling was followed by a district court judge's order in October that both parties in the case agree on the selection of an independent monitor to oversee the activities of Arpaio's department. The self proclaimed "America's toughest sheriff" is facing an investigation and lawsuit from the U.S. Justice Department accusing him of civil rights violations. Arpaio has constantly denied accusations of racial profiling of Latinos by he or his officers.
