(Sacramento, CA) -- A bill calling for the first statewide plastic bag ban in the U.S. is now on Governor Jerry Brown's desk. The state Senate approved SB 270 on a 22-15 vote yesterday, one day after it was passed by the state Assembly. The bill by three Los Angeles Democrats calls for the phasing out of single-use plastic grocery bags by grocery stories and pharmacies on July 1st of next year. The ban will expand to cover convenience stores and liquor stores a year later.
