Kerry Preps Trip To Ukraine

(Washington, DC) -- State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki says Secretary of State John Kerry's trip to Kiev will send a strong signal of support to the Ukrainian people. In a telephone news conference, Psaki was pressed about the situation in Crimea after Russian troops moved in. There are reports that the Russians have given Ukrainian forces a deadline to surrender. Psaki called that possibility a dangerous escalation and said the U.S. would "hold Russia directly responsible" for whatever happens.
The U.S. and allies are pushing Russia hard to pull forces out of Crimea. Pressed about possible international sanctions against Russia, Psaki cited a "broad range of options" but offered no specifics. She described the deliberations over options as an ongoing process that includes economic and political factors.
