(Washington, DC) -- Lowe's Home Centers is paying a 500-thousand-dollar penalty as part of a lead paint settlement. Authorities say Lowe's violated federal rules governing lead paint exposure. The EPA says Lowe's could not prove that some contractors it hired were certified by the agency or had used approved lead paint testing kits at work sites. As part of the settlement, Lowe's will implement a new compliance program at more than 17-hundred stores nationwide. Lowe's is the number-two home improvement chain in the U.S.
