(Washington, DC) -- The Government Accountability Office says the Defense Department violated the law when it carried out a controversial prisoner swap for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. U.S. Representative Trent Franks of Arizona says the President is ultimately the one to blame.
The GAO says the Pentagon should have let the relevant congressional committees know about the planned exchange 30 days before doing it. The U.S. got Bergdahl back from the Taliban when it released five Guantanamo Bay inmates to Qatar in late May. The GAO says DOD violated the Antideficiency Act because it used appropriated funds to carry out the swap when no cash was available.
