Do Justice

I got pretty fed up with some Christian liberal friends this past Wednesday. Many think they have occupied the moral high ground given their recent electoral victory. Of course electoral victory says nothing whatsoever about one’s morality. Morality is a terribly complex issue and sometimes one is forced to choose between two less than morally ideal options. That is often the case when it comes to war – we tend to think that killing people is a moral wrong under any circumstance. But then were we wrong in WWII? Was not Hitler a moral scourge so extreme that it justified the necessary destruction to remove him from the geopolitical situation?
This is why I have had such a hard time understanding opposition to the war with Iran. The Islamist Iranian regime is the greatest moral scourge this planet has seen since Hitler. That regime is responsible for taking thousands, probably millions, of lives. Permitted to obtain nuclear weapons their body count would unquestionably climb into the tens of millions. If Hitler’s moral depravity justified WWII, then certainly whatever death and destruction is necessary to remove the Iranian regime is justified. Are we now simply an amoral nation or is something else at play?
I was discussing this with a friend yesterday and mentioned that destroying the Iranian regime would be the greatest act of justice on the world stage since we rid the world of the Nazi scrouge. His response was deeply chilling:
Justice must not make the commute more expensive it seems.
Is that really what is going on? Are we really willing to allow an evil so immense to continue on its merry and evil way simply because of the price of gasoline? Such is not amoral, it is immoral. It is the opposite of the greatest moral good – to love your neighbor as yourself. Such a stance makes self a far greater concern than the neighbor.
My liberal Christian friends are fond of talking to me about “justice” – usually as justification for their latest socialist scheme. After all, they remind me, is it just for that guy over there to have so little when you have so much? Probably not, but I am not sure that such justifies you taking from me by force, even government force, to resolve the issue. But while we argue about such trivialities, we have to be extremely hard hearted to say that it is just for the Mullahs to continue on their mass murderous spree just because we are unwilling to pay more for fuel.
And yet it appears we are just so hard hearted.
If you are a regular church-goer, you have undoubtedly been preached to about Micah 6:8:
He has told you, mortal one, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?
When it comes to Iran, the destruction of that evil regime, regardless of what inconvenience it might cost us here, is the only way to “do justice.” Heck, it is the only way to “love kindness” as well in light of that regimes murderous actions.
If you are a Christian and you take your faith seriously, the only just and moral stance is to support finishing the job with Iran. If you, personally, want to “do justice” then you need to be convincing all your other friends of that as well, up to and including evangelizing them into the faith.
