The left-wing Secular Coalition for Arizona has teamed up with Democrat state Sen. Juan Mendez to target the “In God We Trust” specialty license plates offered in Arizona.

The group, which opposes religion in government, and Mendez are trying to get rid of the plates because the purchase fee helps to support the Alliance Defending Freedom.

The Scottsdale-based group which advocates for religious liberty, marriage, and family, has been labeled a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center because of their “anti-LGBT view.”

In a statement, Kristen Waggoner with the ADF called the effort an “unwarranted attack” and urged the Secular Coalition of Arizona to “create a license plate that expresses their view” rather than shut down free speech.

Waggoner also pointed out that the SPLC routinely “engages in baseless smear campaigns with which it disagrees, and it only attacks groups on the right.”
