A Prayer for Juneteenth

History matters because it teaches us lessons that shape our future.

In Romans 15:4, Paul reminds believers that what was written in the past was preserved to teach us, encourage us, and give us hope. That principle applies not only to Scripture but also to the stories and experiences that have shaped our communities and nation.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free. While it is a celebration of freedom, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of understanding experiences beyond our own. Clarence Haynes reminds us that true healing begins when we are willing to listen, learn, and seek understanding rather than overlook difficult parts of history.

As followers of Christ, we are called to love our neighbors, bear one another’s burdens, and pursue unity rooted in truth. That kind of unity requires humility. It requires hearts willing to learn and compassion willing to listen.

Today, may we ask God to help us see others through His eyes and become people who bring healing wherever He places us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the lessons that history teaches us. Give us hearts that are humble enough to learn, compassionate enough to listen, and courageous enough to pursue healing where there has been hurt.

Help us see people through Your eyes and love our neighbors with the grace You have shown us. Teach us to learn from the past without fear, knowing that truth and understanding can lead to greater unity and hope.

Make us instruments of peace, reconciliation, and healing in our families, churches, communities, and nation.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
