LISTENERS' SALUTE:

On January 4, 1944, Charles (Charlie) Heinl left his hometown of Minster, Ohio at age 17. Little did he know that 10 months later he would be involved in the tragic sinking of the ship he was aboard, the USS Gambier Bay, and he himself would survive 42 hours hanging onto a life raft in the Pacific.

When Oscar was 18, he had two choices: become a sharecropper or join the military. He enlisted in the Navy and became a Seaman First Class during WWII. Oscar rarely spoke about what it was like to serve during segregation; his own children knew very little about his military service. The “We Honor Veterans” program helped change that.

Meet US Army Air, Staff Sergeant Dr. Norman Leo Stock, awarded multiple medals for his military service. Aug. 5th 2015 AseraCare of Johnstown honored a patient in his home, for his services in the US Air Corps. A wooden plaque, made by a fellow veteran, was presented to him, by our Executive Director, Danielle Cimba, his RN/CM Samantha Griffith & our Veteran volunteer Edward Mihalacki...
