JetBlue Flight Averts Collision With U.S. Air Force Jet Near Venezuela

A JetBlue passenger jet bound for New York took evasive action on Friday to avoid a mid-air collision with a U.S. Air Force plane near Venezuela, a pilot said in an air traffic control recording. JetBlue Flight 1112 had departed the Caribbean nation of Curaçao and was flying about 40 miles (64 km) off the coast of Venezuela when the Airbus A320 reported encountering the Air Force jet, which did not have its transponder activated, according to the recording captured by liveatc.net. The Air Force pilot was within a few miles of the plane and at the same altitude, the JetBlue pilot said on the recording. “They passed directly in our flight path… They don’t have their transponder turned on. It’s outrageous,” the pilot said. The Air Force jet then entered Venezuelan airspace, the JetBlue pilot said. “We almost had a mid-air collision up here.” A JetBlue spokesperson said on Monday the company’s top priority is safety. “Our crew members are trained on proper procedures for various flight situations, and we appreciate our crew for promptly reporting this situation to our leadership team. We have reported this incident to federal authorities and will participate in any investigation.” The incident happened as the United States has mounted a large-scale military buildup in the southern Caribbean as President Donald Trump campaigns to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, pushing relations to their most volatile point in years. U.S. Southern Command said in a statement Monday that it is aware of the incident and reviewing the matter. The military added its “aircrews are highly trained professionals who operate in accordance with established procedures and applicable airspace requirements. Safety remains a top priority, and we are working through the appropriate channels to assess the facts surrounding the situation.” Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration warned major airlines of a “potentially hazardous situation” when flying over Venezuela and urged them to exercise caution. Major airlines from around the world have halted flights as tensions have worsened and Trump has threatened to begin hitting land targets in Venezuela. The FAA did not immediately comment Monday on the JetBlue incident.

Iowa National Guard Members Killed In Weekend Attack In Syria

The two Iowa National Guard members killed in a weekend attack in Syria that the U.S. military blamed on the Islamic State group were identified Monday and remembered as dedicated soldiers. The U.S. Army named them as Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff in their honor, saying that, “We are grateful for their service and deeply mourn their loss.” The Pentagon’s chief spokesman, Sean Parnell, has said a U.S. civilian working as an interpreter also was killed. Three other Guard members were wounded in the attack, the Iowa National Guard said Monday, with two of them in stable condition and the other in good condition. The attack was a major test for the rapprochement between the United States and Syria since the ouster of autocratic leader Bashar Assad a year ago, coming as the U.S. military is expanding its cooperation with Syrian security forces. Hundreds of American troops are deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting IS.

Wisconsin judge's trial begins over helping immigrant escape arrest

Prosecutors played audio recordings to show jurors that a Wisconsin judge knew what was at stake when she directed an immigrant to a private door while federal agents were in the courthouse to arrest him. Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan's trial on charges of obstruction and concealment began Monday. There is no dispute that Dugan directed Eduardo Flores-Ruiz to leave her courtroom through a private door after telling immigration agents to speak with the chief judge. Flores-Ruiz was later arrested outside the courthouse and deported. The government’s case is expected to run through at least Thursday.

Brian Walshe Found Guilty Of Murdering His Wife

A Massachusetts man has been found guilty of murdering his wife, who has never been found after she disappeared nearly three years ago. Brian Walshe was convicted of first-degree murder Monday after pleading guilty last month to lesser charges of misleading police and illegally disposing of her body. Investigators relied on online searches Walshe made about dismemberment and disposing of a body. Surveillance also showed a man resembling him throwing heavy trash bags into a dumpster. Prosecutors showed photos of many items recovered that were connected to Ana Walshe, including her vaccination card. She had taken out a $2.7 million life insurance policy naming him as the beneficiary.

Federal authorities have announced the arrests of four alleged members of an extremist group suspected of planning coordinated bombing attacks in Southern California. They are members of an offshoot of a pro-Palestinian group called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. Australia Eyes Tougher National Gun Laws After Mass Shooting In Sydney

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is proposing tougher national gun laws after a weekend mass shooting in Sydney. Australian leaders have promised to immediately overhaul already-tough gun control laws after a mass shooting targeted a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. At least 15 people died in the attack. It has fueled criticism that authorities are not doing enough to combat a surge in antisemitic crimes. Among the new measures proposed Monday would be a limit on the number of guns someone can own and a review of licenses held over time. Sunday's violence erupted at the end of a summer day when thousands had flocked to Bondi Beach. They included hundreds gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea event celebrating the start of the Jewish festival.

Islam Control, NOT Gun Control

On today’s show, Josh dives into the horrific terror attack in Australia and tears apart the Left’s knee-jerk calls for gun control—arguing they completely miss the real threat staring us in the face. He breaks down why the warning signs for an attack like this were obvious to anyone willing to look. Josh then turns to Brown University, where two people were murdered over the weekend, and explains why the same tired gun-control rhetoric won’t save anyone there either—especially with the suspect still on the loose. Finally, Josh responds to Megyn Kelly’s recent on-air swipe at him and exposes what her attack really reveals about her priorities and worldview.
